In 1960 when Duke Power announced plans for construction of Cowan’s Ford Dam, eight landlocked sailors developed the concept for a yacht club which would promote class racing. In 1961 Lake Norman Yacht Club was incorporated with 25 charter members from Charlotte, Hickory, Salisbury, Statesville, Asheboro and Greensboro. Obviously the idea was for an "area" club, rather than a "Charlotte" club.  The first “club house” built was the covered pavilion with facilities.

In 1967 a major undertaking was conceived --the building of an adequate clubhouse.  In 1969 the two-story clubhouse became the sailing home for LNYC.  Over time, the club has hosted numerous national class and US Sailing regattas. To accommodate these events, additional docks were added and eventually a Race Management building.  A popular facility is the camping area for members and regatta visitors.

Lake Norman Yacht Club has been recognized for its excellence in race management regionally as well as nationally, receiving the St. Petersburg Trophy for Excellence in Race Management in 1999.
